In terms of Sara Rich's first question: Artistic interpretation can do both–sometimes, initial interpretation can be limitless, but when it is seen visually (or heard audibly, etc.) the interpreter can't help but conform his/her interpretation to the art. On the other hand, it can expand an interpretation because it can address elements of the text that weren't initially considered.2
